BARBADIAN CLEAN UP EFFORTS ON THE INTERNATIONAL STAGE
Clean Up Barbados is receiving international attention as it leads into its last week of coordination of the nationwide event scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 18, 2010. Future Centre Trust Administrative Director, Nicole Garofano, explained the initiative is linked to the Clean Up The World initiative, who have requested specific media coverage and interview access in preparation for and on the day itself. ‘We are looking forward to being included in the worldwide link up and are excited to see that Barbadians are being recognised globally for their efforts in keeping the country clean” says Garofano.
“Clean Up The World has been helping communities encourage environmental activities for some seventeen years and has been delighted with the contribution made by the local initiative. Included in last year’s global annual review as a case study and recently as a recognised contributor in the Global resource Clean Up The World BioDiversity Fact Sheet, “Barbados is again attracting attention as an action based society keen to keep its natural environment clean and healthy through this year’s initiative”, Garofano commented.
Clean Up Barbados, now in its second year, provides communities an opportunity to have one dedicated day of action throughout the country where adopted areas receive attention. Corporate Barbados seems to be taking the initiative as an opportunity to team build and create a sense of corporate social and environmental responsibility. Companies such as SBI Distribution, who this year have amassed a seventy six strong contingent to clean up Brighton Beach and Spring Garden highway, to the Caribbean Development Bank who have drawn together eight people to help clean a west coast beach, are seeing the benefits. Mr Bruce Tudor, Assistant Managing Director of SBI Distribution concurred with the team building aspect of the event by commenting “In 2009 we had approximately sixty people who participated. We saw the clean up as a good opportunity to build our corporate citizenship and for the team to work on a community event together”.
Thanks to the link with Clean Up The World, Barbados will continue to build it’s global media coverage and help along the Prime Minister’s aims of making Barbados the ‘Green Jewel’ of the Caribbean. “Events such as Clean Up Barbados are an excellent opportunity for the population to take one day to focus on a clean up, but it is vital that these efforts and this awareness is taken throughout the year. Enforcement and upholding of legislation as it relates to littering and illegal dumping are critical for the health of the country,” said Garofano. It was also noted that by extension, environmental issues must be taken more seriously on the whole, “The Sustainable Development Policy is there but recommendations need to be put in place, including enforcement of such legislation.”
Registrations are still being accepted for groups and sponsorships for the September 18 event, with those interested encouraged to call the Future Centre Trust on 625 2020, email to info@cleanupbarbados.org or visit the website at www.cleanupbarbados.org.

HARRIS PAINTS ON BOARD FOR CHILDREN’S HOME MAKEOVER
Mrs Sharron Alleyne-Elcock, Regional Marketing Manager of the Harris Group of Companies, has confirmed that Harris Paints are taking an ingenious approach to participation in this year’s Clean Up Barbados campaign on September 18, by choosing to paint the interiors of two of the cottages at the Nightengale Children’s Home in Black Rock with the permission of the Child Care Board.
After a suggestion by Future Centre Trust Marketing Committee Member, Rebecca Skeete, the Child Care Board was contacted as a possible worthy recipient of a painting contribution suggested by Luke Ticknor, Harris Paints Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “Harris Paints has chosen to undertake this project because we recognize the need to support our community and because, as the Caribbean Champions of Colour, we know the importance of adding colour to people’s lives, especially the lives of underpriviledged children,” said Ticknor. Harris Paints are also contributing not just their team, but paint, and painting supplies to their unique effort.
Nicole Garofano, Project Coordinator of the nationwide event, says “Clean Up Barbados is not just about cleaning beaches and gullies, it is also about identifying areas of the community where such volunteer efforts would be put to the best use. Children’s homes and Aged Care facilities are two sectors of our community where such a concentration of assistance is well received and we are happy to partner with Harris Paints and the Child Care Board in this instance.”
Companies are encouraged to ‘think outside the box’ as it relates to their inputs to the campaign. It was noted that often contributions to events such as these are viewed as a strain on resources for companies. However as we can see here, Harris Paints are making a worthwhile contribution to the wider community while helping to build team spirit within the organisation and helping the kids to have a brighter place to live.
Any other organisations who wish to contribute to this particular location in the way of furniture or other recognised needs are encouraged to contact Nicole Garofano of the Future Centre Trust by emailing nicole@futurecentretrust.org to arrange a contribution in consultation with the Child Care Board.
Clean Up Barbados takes place on Saturday September 18, 2010. The public is invited to participate by selecting an area of concern, drawing together a team for participation and registering the community with the Future Centre Trust. Teams can commence at their chosen time of the morning on the day, but are asked to be completed by around midday to allow the weighing-in of what is collected to be undertaken in a timely manner. Sponsorship opportunities are also still available, particularly as it relates to media, T shirt and haulage contributions. Those interested are encouraged to call the Future Centre Trust on 625 2020, email to info@cleanupbarbados.org or visit the website at www.cleanupbarbados.org.

BAJAN TALENT LENDS ITSELF TO CLEANING UP BARBADOS
Barbadian talent, Ms Tamara Marshall was so disappointed by the debris left around the Oistins area some two weeks ago that she took action and posted what she felt was a simple message on the social media site, Facebook. The response Tamara received was unexpected and in many ways overwhelming, with fellow Barbadians, both here and overseas, sharing their concerns over what appears to be a complete disregard for the cleanliness of our local environs by some members of the population. Her next step was to engage her talented colleagues to put together what she has called “Artists Uniting for a Cleaner Barbados”.
Artists including Allison Norville-Forde, Paula Hinds, Marisa Lindsay, Indrani, TC, John King, Biggie Irie, Jennifer Highland, Jan Gibson, and of course Tamara, came together at Tamara’s BeatOne Production Studios to record messages of waste responsibility to the public to be included in the Future Centre Trust’s Clean Up Barbados Campaign. Furthermore, they will be inviting partners to develop this content into an ongoing public education message to be made available to local and regional media outlets, including further use of social media and other internet sources.
“Tamara’s energy has been such a great contribution to the awareness campaign, not only to the Clean Up Barbados Campaign day, but to the issue of littering and illegal dumping in general. Spending time with such a great talent in Tamara and her production partner Jim, have been a very inspiring contribution to such an important initiative. The Future Centre Trust is so very appreciative of these efforts being undertaken by Tamara, Jim and the Artists for a Cleaner Barbados”, says Nicole Garofano, Project Coordinator – Clean Up Barbados. “We have thought of including artists into our campaigns previously, but when a personal experience occurs such as Tamara’s, that individual becomes the catalyst of action against the issues at hand”, she added.
Tamara has offered her help on the day itself by taking on the role of ‘Roving Reporter’ for the planned video coverage. “We are looking to secure additional sponsors for the video production on the day and certainly for the longer video production with the artists to provide local media with messages to help the waste management issue of Barbados,” says Garofano. With such a backing of interest from such a widely known range of talented musicians in Barbados, the message is sure to receive a widespread impact.
