At a meeting held at Emerald City Supermarket at Six Roads, head office for A1 Supermarkets on July 15, Managing Director Mr Andrew Bynoe expressed his appreciation for the efforts made by the Future Centre Trust and its volunteers on No Plastic Bag Day.
A1 have now taken the initiative to import their own branded reusable bags – the ‘blue green’ bag – and are very keen to phase out the use of plastic bags down to 10 percent of what they issue now.
Mr Bynoe supports the introduction of a charge for plastic bags, however would like to see wider support for such a fee. The Future Centre Trust has advised they would like to see some results as to the reduction of plastic bags as a percentage of the normal amount of bags issuedover a period, but admits that a charge for the bags in the long term, may be the largest encouragement the public will need to reduce plastic bag use.
The FCT will work with A1 and SuperCentre to provide a marketing message to the public as reminders to use some of the 20,000 reusable bags which have been sold since No Plastic Bag Day on May 5. As with most of our projects, contributions are needed to design and deliver this message and we are now in the process of exploring these options.
Of course, with the Pic O De Crop Finalist Adrian Clarke now on side with his No Plastic Bag Day song, we will now be able to develop a jingle to submit to our radio stations and to have online which will help this cause. Thanks to Adrian for choosing this much needed project concept as a focus for one of your Crop Over 2k10 contributions and we look forward to continuing to work with you to help reduce this impact on the environment.
