Shell Western Supply and Trading Limited is the Newest Green Business in Barbados
Shell Western Supply and Trading Limited is the newest green business in Barbados according to the Future Centre Trust, the home of the Green Business Barbados programme initiative. Shell West started the programme in office in May and has focused heavily on waste reduction and recycling measures by instituting a recycling campaign in office for all plastics, glass, metal, paper and e-waste. The green coordinator for the office Lyn-Marie Sealy and her Team have been passionate about greening their office and have dedicated much of their time within the last few months to make sure that the office is complying with the requirement of the programme.
Shell Western Supply and Trading Limited realize that its day-to-day operations and other responsibilities have the potential to negatively impact on the environment. As a result Shell West is committed to making environmentally responsible decisions within its own office in order to facilitate the creation of the green economy here in Barbados.
On Wednesday August 18, Nicole represented the Future Centre Trust at a presentation to the children who were attending the Governor General’s Agricultural Camp, organised by Senator Dr Frances Chandler.
The group of some twenty children ranged in ages from 6 to 13 and included a wide range of knowledge of environmental matters.
The children learned a little about the FCT and its history before moving onto a learning game where everyone had to find links to various words and their impacts called the Web of Life. Then it was over to Keenan and Ashlea who helped Nicole with some of her research by reading two chapters of the story book of Bri and Luk to see how the group understood the words and the storyline. Everyone did – so that was a good research session!
Thanks to Dr Chandler for inviting Nicole to present and interact a little with the children, and also for the invitation to attend the awards ceremony at Government House. The children were well behaved and looked so smart all dressed up in their finery! Congrats to the Camp Counsellors, including one past camper who helped another year of camp end in success!
Photos to come!
On August 11, Nicole Garofano met with Mrs Lulu Cole of Cole’s Printery to hand over the draft content and layout of Book 1 of the Bri and Luk series – learning tools with a focal area of climate change for kids.
All being well, we will have Book 1 ready for distribution to Class 3 students throughout Barbados by the second week of September.
Once ready, we ill of course be in touch with our readers again and arrange a press release and training session where possible for Class three teachers.
The book’s development has been funded by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office managed locally by the British High Commission of Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean here in Bridgetown. The printing has been funded by the Paloma Charitable Trust in Barbados and we thank both funders for being so very patient in getting this publication to this stage.
Look out for more information in the coming weeks!
On August 11, the FCT’s Administrative Director, Nicole Garofano and Board Member, Kammie Holder, were invited to a meeting with the NCC as they prepared to launch the Arbor Day Fair Celebrations to take place on September 25 in Queen’s Park.
Chairman, Tyrone Lowe, addressed the group with an outline of the fair’s objectives and some of the progress so far. Project Coordinator Ricardo Marshall, then explained the logistics and asked those present to assist in sharing the information of the fair and to provide possible booth holders who share like minded environmental principles.
More on the fair as information is received. To register contact the NCC at 425 1200 and ask for Ms Beverly White or Mr Ricardo Marshall.
Thanks to Corrie Scott, the FCT is featured in the August 2010 edition of the new online resource of Art happenings in Barbados!
Corrie has been a great supporter of the FCT over the years, particularly with inclusion in our Fund Raising Art Auctions. She is a great credit to the Art scene in Barbados and we are thankful for her support.
