Thanks to Kammie Holder, Nicole Garofano was invited to present to the members of the Barbados Public Workers Cooperative Credit Union Sports and Social Club on Monday June 14.
The group were interested to hear of the update of the current Future Centre Trust programme and entertained some good, thought provoking questions.
Also present was Dr Cherrie Small – who spoke to the group on the topic of communicable diseases, with a focus on the influenza virus.
The presentation was the last in the series marking the club’s 40th anniversary year and the FCT was pleased to be a part of the celebrations.
The FCT looks forward to welcoming back the members of the club to the Clean Up Barbados campaign
taking place on September 18, 2010 as a follow up from last year’s great efforts in Jack in the Box Gully.
Thanks to Maurice and Jeffrey once again for your invitation to present.
Trees have now been planted along the Wildey Main Road thanks to Barney Gibbs and his team from Adopt-a-Stop. These trees were planted with the support of Nassco Limited to compliment the launch of the new PRIUS to Barbados on Earth Day. Also contributing to this planting are Peter Bynoe and Myron Shepherd.
This is the first planting for the Future Trees project and we thank Barney and his team for their efforts thus far. The roadway outside Moore Paragon and the Luther Thorne School heading towards town now have Frangipani trees with Mahogany’s to come.
This is a great project, with more information available at this link: The Future Trees
On Wednesday June 9, Lani and Nicole joined members of the Barbados Environment Community Network (BECoN) and members of the Grassroots Video Productions community in a training programme of Project Development basics given by Nicole Leotaud of the Caribbean Natural Resource Institute (CANARI).
The session was the last of a series of comprehensive training provided to the BECoN network over the past eighteen months and was a fitting way to end the series. Nicole provided great insights through her
many years of project development in the Natural Resources area. She is now the Executive Director of
CANARI and we were very fortunate to have her assistance. She was able to share content developed
by the Trinidadian NGO, Venia Apwann who kindly offered their assistance by sharing their content.
The seventeen attendees appreciated the training, with comments such as “the best training every experienced” and “a great way to learn” being common in the evaluation of the day.
Thanks to Nicole and to Nicholas of the Barbados Marine Trust, Secretary of the BECoN network
for their great work.
The Future Centre Trust took their message to the Barbados Horticultural Society (BHS) on Tuesday evening, June 8, at their Balls Plantation home, to inform their members of the current FCT programme with a special focus on the Future Trees Project.
Thanks to Volunteer Project Coordinators, Peter Bynoe and Barney Gibbs, who were both able to come along and present the project, the members of the BHS were impressed by the plans and were eager to assist both in the choosing of areas, suggestions of additional plants and possible donation of plants to the project in the future.
The invitation to present was received from Mrs Kathleen Loftfield of the BHS and was gladly accepted by Nicole Garofano of the FCT as this discussion was in the making for some time!
Thanks again to the members of the BHS for allowing us the time to present to your members evening and to Barney and Peter for coming out to present the Future Trees project.
More information on the BHS can be found at this link Barbados Horticultural Society
