and coverage in the Nation and the Advocate of No Plastic Bag Day.
Will work to find the appropriate links or if someone finds them first,
please email!
Thanks to the efforts of Mr Ian Bourne who chose to take time to attend our Press Launch last Thursday. I am pleased to provide the link here: FCT on Bajan Reporter. Thank you for your coverage Ian,
Very much appreciated.
Local Supermarkets are embracing the public outreach campaign led.
by the FCT – No Plastic Bag Day – to take place on Saturday May 8, 2010.
SuperCentre, Trimart, Carlton A1 and Emerald City are the major
contributors to the use of plastic bags issued by the supermarket
chains hourly.
They appreciate the benefit to the Barbadian Environment
to reduce this daily issue and as such have put their money where their mouth is by supplying some 37,200 bags for sale to the local shopping community.
Press attended the launch, organised by Ms Allison Carrington of SuperCentre at their JB’s location. “This is the first time such a collaboration has been made with the supermarket chains in Barbados”, Ms Carrington said. “This is timely and has built on the research completed by the FCT over the past two years”.
The three Supermarket chains have among them some 12 locations participating on the day covering the length and breadth of Barbados with other organisations also taking up the mantle for the day including Coffee Bean and Best of Barbados stores.
Volunteers are now needed to help man the stores and encourage
shoppers to buy reusable shopping bags in place of their regular
plastic supply (allowing for trash bags of course!) on Saturday May 8.
Email us or check the update on our recent post for the sign on sheet
and a list of locations.
Thank you to Allison and her organising skills and to the press for
supporting this initiative. We NEED you in the next two weeks!!
Keep it up!
Thank you to those supporters who chose to come out and learn more of the FCT programme and strategic plan ‘face to face’ on Thursday, April 22 – EARTH DAY – 2010.
The attendance at Guardian General Insurance Recreation room, venue for the launch, was impressive and contributory. The question and answer session was informative and posed several questions of the intention of the FCT to become a lobbying group for government initiatives benefiting the environment. We aim to be advocates in this area and will work to provide proven examples of where government can learn from our work and look to implement the relevant legislation – charging for plastic bag issue as an example. We cannot suggest legislation without the appropriate research and proven facts so welcome your support in gathering this evidence.
Thanks again to those who made it on the day – to those that could not make it, please find attached a pdf of the powerpoint presentation made. Press Conference April 22 2010
